Navigating Risks, Managing Security and receiving Support!

From: HRD HUB, York University

Over the past three years, Alice Nah has been managing a research project called ‘Navigating Risk, Managing Security, and Receiving Support’ – a study about the experiences of human rights defenders in Colombia, Mexico, Egypt, Kenya and Indonesia.

We are happy to share with you the project website through which you will be able to get access to research findings in English, Arabic, Spanish, Kiswahili and Bahasa Indonesia.

On the website now, you will see the following resources:

Over the next few months, we will continue to release more materials.

We have also commissioned a number of artists to produce creative responses to these research findings. On this page, you will see the following:

  • Poetry films made by students at the Centre for Applied Human Rights on the topic of wellbeing of defenders at risk, based on verbatim poetry composed by Juliana Mensah from the transcripts of some interviews
  • Two songs by a Kenyan artist, Rapasa, in Luo and Kiswahili languages celebrating the journey of human rights defenders

Over the next few months, we will be adding short films, drawings, paintings, music, poetry and other creative work based on the experiences of defenders as shared with us through this project. We hope you find these works affirming, inspiring, and encouraging.

We welcome any feedback you have on these research findings and artistic work!
